What is a functional movement? And, how can it be screened?
This is what DARI has been offering for more than a decade. Let us explain what it is and how it can be help to you!
A functional movement is a movement that is based on real-world situational biomechanics. Most of these movements involve multiple planes and joints to achieve their completion. Based on knowing which joint and planes are used more or less will help explain the movements quality. From researching these movements scientists have been able to identify when a person has restricted movement patterns, which may put them at more of a risk for injury. Using technology like 3D motion capture a person’s movement pattern can be easily defined allowing health professionals the ability to review and intervene. This process is known as a movement screening. The goals from a screen are to improve the overall functionality of the person in a way that reduces their potential for a musculoskeletal injury and improve their overall movements performance. This can be applied to a variety of situations; athletic movements, workplace movements, or movements related to activities of daily living.
Most movement screens are total body screens, however some can be reduced for specific regions of the body. Regardless of the screen, people benefit knowing more about their motion health. A functional screen is a great tool to help translate a subjective experience into an objective experience.
